Former United Nations Secretary General and Nobel Peace laureate, Kofi Annan has published an op/ed demanding the need for massive government control over social media entities in order to “protect democracy.”
Annan published the following in Project Syndicate on Feb. 16:
If even the most technologically advanced countries cannot protect the integrity of the electoral process, one can imagine the challenges facing countries with less know-how. In other words, the threat is global. In the absence of facts and data, the mere possibility of manipulation fuels conspiracy theories and undermines faith in democracy and elections at a time when public trust is already low.
Social media’s ideological “echo chambers” exacerbate people’s natural biases and diminish opportunities for healthy debate. This has real-world effects, because it fosters political polarization and erodes leaders’ capacity to forge compromises, the basis of democratic stability. Likewise, the hate speech, terrorist appeals, and racial and sexual harassment that have found a home on the Internet can lead to real-world violence.
Annan is likely working in concordance with international progressive financier, George Soros. At Davos last month, he put social media organizations on notice. Soros blamed the open access of information on social media for disrupting his globalist agenda and made it known that this type of behavior would not be tolerated.
“Companies earn their profits by exploiting their environment. Mining and oil companies exploit the physical environment; social media companies exploit the social environment,” Soros said, building his anti-capitalist narrative. “This is particularly nefarious because social media companies influence how people think and behave without them even being aware of it.”
“The owners of the platform giants consider themselves the masters of the universe, but in fact they are slaves to preserving their dominant position. It is only a matter of time before the global dominance of the US IT monopolies is broken,” Soros said, in a direct threat to the tech giants. “Davos is a good place to announce that their days are numbered. Regulation and taxation will be their undoing and EU Competition Commissioner Vestager will be their nemesis.”
The global elite have put the social media corporations into their sights for failing to do enough to influence the 2016 election in Hillary Clinton’s favor. Expect the social media corporations to enact all kinds of restrictions on free speech preemptively, particularly for conservatives, in a craven attempt to avoid the wrath of well-connected power players like Soros and his flunky Annan.
